Andy Cousins: A Community Gem at Watford Foodland

His title is “clerk” at Watford Foodland, but for the community of Watford, it’s Andy Cousins’ exceptional people and customer service skills that make him a standout employee, winning the hearts of grocery shoppers in Lambton County.

“I love how Andy greets everyone, every day with a great big smile,” said Garreth Balfe, Watford Foodland Owner and Operator. “Andy brings a great attitude to work, which is contagious to everyone who interacts with him.”

Andy is supported by Lambton County Developmental Services’ (LCDS) Empowering Employment Program, which focuses on creating meaningful employment opportunities for people with developmental disabilities. He works two mornings a week and has found his strength in customer service activities, such as assisting the cashier with bagging groceries and helping customers carry their purchases to their vehicles.

The team at Watford Foodland worked with Andy and LCDS to ensure they were unlocking his full potential, emphasizing his abilities, which in turn led to a shared win.

Watford locals have taken notice, and many now choose to shop on the days Andy is working, just to experience his friendly and helpful service. His positive impact on the community is a testament to his hard work and dedication.

“My advice for other store owners and managers would be to not hesitate when thinking of hiring anyone with developmental disabilities,” Balfe said. “They bring just as much to the table, if not more, than any other job candidates. It will have a positive impact on your staff and customers.”

By fostering inclusive workplaces, Andy and the team at Watford Foodland celebrate diversity and shared success in supporting communities.

Good work, Andy!
